I let my fingers run across the piano keys, pressing hard enough so that the slightest sound of the keys can be heard. The silence around me was deafening.
I had just been released from hospital yesterday. My right arm was broken so i could not use it. it now hung uselessly in it's cast. The blue sling that held it in place was slung over my neck and it rested on my shoulder.
I sighed, i was the only person in the house. My mom and sister went out, they had to visit some aunt that i never heard off. They would be back soon, they had told me.
They felt like i was not injured enough to be payed their attention.
A piece of my loose hair fell over my eyes. I blew it out of the way.I heard the door being opened and then closed.
I heard the shuffling of footsteps in the living room. I turned around, half expecting my mom and sister instead
I came face to face with Greyson. he smiled at me and gave me a warm package.
'My grandma made more since your first batch got crushed.' He explained, a little too softly. The smell of hot oatmeal cookies waffled to my nose. I was tempted to rip it open and stuff the cookies into my mouth.
'Tell your grandma I said thanks.' I told him. he smiled. We locked eyes for a minute. His warm dark eyes on mine. He leaned forward.
I broke the silence by coughing softly to get his attention. My cheeks were red. He looked away quickly, blushing.
'Um, did u finish solving the letter?' I asked him. He shook his head. His hair fell into his eyes. I found that incredibly cute. Stop it. I told myself. You are NOT falling for him. I mentally slapped myself.
He turned to his bag to look for something. He pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. He smoothen it out on the piano and handed it to me.
I read those lines again. I was sure that the first part was relating to me.
'Hey Shay, may i take a look at the manuscript book?' Greyson asked. I simply nodded and quickly read the rest.
The one that opens another
The thing i gave to my whole world
I trusted it to my most treasured possession
The first line... I looked around my house hoping for an answer. I heard rustling behind me and i turned to look. I saw Greyson fiddling with a old lock, by the looks of it and a bunch of keys.
A LOCK! I looked at the lines again. Opens...what opens a lock? A KEY! I can't believe i never saw that. I smiled and continued reading. First line solved.
Second line....
The thing I gave to my whole world.
What can that be? As, i was thinking a old memory ran through my mind.
I was back at my dad's dingy flat. We were sitting on the piano bench, my dad playing the piano. I sat still staring at his hands that were moving very fast. I was about 5 at this time.
My blue dress was creased from sitting on the piano bench too long and my hair was tied back with a rubber band.
He was playing a piece that i have heard many times before.
It was written for the love of his life, my mom.
I remembered thinking that his hands were like little monkeys( don't ask me where this thought came from) agile and quick. I knew at that moment that i would do anything to play like my dad.
Suddenly, he stopped playing to look at me, his hand tilted to one side. I copied him, giggling. He smiled.
'Dee, you are my whole world, you know that?' He said.
Then, he faded and i was back in reality, sitting on the piano bench, my brain working fast to what i had just seen.
'Dee, you are my whole world' He had said that which means that...
He gave it to me. What did he give to me?
My hand suddenly had the urge to touch my necklace. I grasp it and gasped loudly. 'What is it?' Greyson asked me, looking worried.
All this time i had forgotten that he was here. I shook my head.
'It's nothing.' I told him. He nodded and continued studying the notes in my dad's manuscript book. 'These are amazing...' i heard Greyson whisper under his breath to himself as he flipped the page.
I turned back to the letter. My dad had given me the key, that i was sure of. When did he give it to me? I searched my brain. The day before he died. My brain answered.
I felt tears come but i resisted it and took a shaky breath to calm myself. I saw out of the corner of my eye that Greyson was looking at me with concern.
I ignored him and continued reading, trying to block out the memory of my dad giving me the key. 'Take care of it well.' My dad's last words echoed in my ears.
'I will.' I said softly. Two lines solved. One more line to go.
