I pull my legs up to my chest as i watch people walk by my house up from my window. The trees outside my new home swayed a little as the wind blew. I absentmindedly played with my key that hung around my neck on a silver chain, my eyes still watching them. My fingers traced the key that i knew so well again and again. 'Dee.' The call was faint and short with some kind of urgency in it. I stretched my legs and slowly stood up, walking out of my room and down the stairs to where the sound was coming from. I walked into the kitchen, to which i saw my mum scrubbing the dishes at the sink, her back to me.
I leaned against the counter top, waiting for her to speak. I stared at the shiny tiled floor. She did not turn her head, but i very well knew that she had seen me. 'Dee, change into something nice and tell your sister to do the same, AND by nice i mean my definition of nice not your definition.' She said glaring at me, her hand still scrubbing. I shrugged and asked her: 'Why?'
'Neighbors coming over for dinner.' She simply replied. I rolled my eyes at her, it was a tradition to every house i moved to. Within the first week at a new home, my mum will always invite the neighbors over.
'We have neighbors?' I say, my voice laced with sarcasm. 'Gosh, i did not know that! Who knew we would have neighbors in OK?' I turned to walk out.
'No sarcastic comments on their appearance or anything at all, best behavior at all times when they're here. I'm seriously Dee.' She shouted at me as i walked up the creamy white stairs. I merely grunted at her. I walked up to my sister's room and banged on the door. 'Cam!!! Open up!' I yelled. The door creaked open. 'Yes? and don't call me Cam, ugh i told you Jules! Call me Jules!!!' She yelled. I ignored her.'Change into something nice, neighbors coming over for dinner. mum said.' I told her. She narrowed her eyes and slammed the door in my face.
Who knew a 7 year old could be so vicious. I walked back to my room and took a quick shower before changing into my best jeans and a blue blouse. I ran a comb through my long brown hair and pulled it into a ponytail.
When i was done, i walked downstairs to see my mum in a frantic rush. I found my sister laying the table, arranging the cutlery.
She wore a forget-me-not blue dress with black leggings underneath. She looked angelic with her mane of soft light brown hair. I scoffed at that thought. I heard the door open and several people enter. I did not turn to face them. My sister looked up and rushed past me to stand beside my mum, smiling all the way. I turned and walked slowly to the door.
Hopefully, i don't scare them away.
