Wren expertly took her phone out of her sweatshirt pocket. She made sure to reveal it enough so that only she could see it. No new text messages. Dangit. Exactly what did Brady expect her to do, without him texting her every five minutes. She peeked around the classroom to make sure Mrs. Colyer was still at the table in the back, explaining the food lab to the freshmen for the fiftieth time. She went back to looking at her phone, and checked her emails. One new email, well aren’t I popular? She thought sarcastically, as she clicked on it. As it loaded, she wrote another answer down in her science notebook to make it look like she was actually doing the assignment. She peeked back on its progress, and saw it was half loaded. She read it as it appeared.
Ms. Juliette…
This must be important, they used my last name.
…It is our great honor to inform you…
Wren raised her eyebrow, as she thought of all the videos she had sent out to audition for gigs.
…That your application has been accepted…
Sweet! We have a gig!
…And Romeo’s Downfall is invited to go on tour with…
Wren’s eye widened at the last two words. No! It can’t be! She read the entire message again, to make sure it was true. It still said the same thing. She jumped up, and knocked her chair over.
“YES! OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD!” She screamed, “THANK YOU!” She beamed at Mrs. Colyer, who was staring at her, utterly perplexed.
“Child, you’re killing this ADHD woman. What are you so dang psyched about?” She asked, with her thick Texan twang. Wren briefly considered the pros and cons of telling Mrs. Colyer, but Colyer was ‘hip,’ she’d get it.
“You know how I’m in a band?” Wren asked tentatively,
“Yes, it’s all you, Ashe, Cameron, and Brady talk about. Get to the point.” Mrs. Colyer responded with an exasperated sigh,
“Well, I sent out audition videos, and one of them was just accepted! We’re going on tour!”
“As a headliner?!” Bianna asked, looking up at Wren with stars in her eyes. Wren shook her head,
“Nah, as an opener. It’s still really cool though! We’ve done gigs before, but this is our first real tour!” Bianna beamed, she was one of Wren’s favorite freshmen. Actually, Wren only liked four of the freshmen. The rest kind of annoyed her.
“I’m so proud of you guys! Romeo’s Downfall is the bomb! You all really deserve--”
“Hold up!” Alexia cut Bianna off. You see, while Bianna, Steven, Emalyn, and Madi were Wren’s favorite freshmen, Alexia was probably the one that she despised the most. Wren gritted her teeth as Alexia continued “Who are you going on tour with? Cause you know, if it’s someone cool, I’ll be expecting me some backstage V.I.P passes.” Alexia gave her a coocky smile that set Wren on edge. Wren hated cocky people. Especially cocky freshmen. And Alexia was the cockiest freshman that ever existed.
“Don’t expect anything.” Wren spit out as kindly as she could, “I don’t even know if we can give out free backstage passes.” Alexia pouted,
“So it’s somebody cool?” Wren narrowed her eyes. She didn’t feel like giving anymore away to anyone, before she even told the guys. They still didn’t know about the audition videos.
“You’ll find out later.” Wren said, before packing her stuff up. She was the first one out of the door, when the bell rang. She ran out of the school, to Cameron’s car. He was leaning against it, with a giant smile on his face. Wren slowed down, and gave him a giant hug.
“You look happy!” He said pleasantly. Wren nodded, and tried to suppress her smile.
“I have some amazing news…” She said, feeling proud of herself. This was a great opportunity for the band. They would get to go on an actual tour!
“Oh?” Cameron raised his eyebrow, his gorgeous chocolate brown eyes amused and confused at the same, “Well, please share.” Wren shook her head,
“Saving it for practice, it’s something the entire band should hear at the same time.” She giggled, she seriously couldn’t wait to see their faces, when they found out. Cameron fake pouted,
“And yet you get to know first?!” Wren rolled her eyes and giggled again.
“Yup, considering it was my efforts that made it possible!” Cameron beamed, and kissed her nose.
“Well, then by all means let’s go!” Wren smiled, and got into the passenger’s side. Cameron drove her to and from school, because he had his license already. Wren still had six months until she could get her permit, six months until she turned 15. They drove the short distance to Cameron’s house, where they had set up their band equipment in the garage. Ashe had thought it would be cool to have a garage band, and Wren liked the idea. It was like the lyric off of ‘Paparazzi’ “Garage glamorous.” Wren and Cameron opened the garage door, to find Ashe and Brady already inside.
“Ready to go?” Ashe asked in a slightly bored tone, and Wren shook her head.
“I have something to tell you guys first!” She beamed, and Brady crinkled his forehead,
“I knew it! You spent that twenty dollars I gave you to preorder that Cody Simpson Barbie doll!” Ashe yelled at the same time Brady asked,
“You’re pregnant?” They looked at each other, and then back at Wren, twin looks of horror, at each other’s suggestions. Wren looked at them like they were nuts.
“Uhh…no. Neither. Eww…gross.” She shuddered at the thought of herself holding a Cody Simpson Barbie doll, or holding a baby, or holding a baby holding a Cody Simpson Barbie doll.
“Then what?” Cameron asked patiently, while Ashe and Brady breathed sighs of relief. Wren let out an excited breath, before telling them.
“I got us a gig!” Wren couldn’t wait to tell them the rest, but it would be best to let them in on it slowly.
“Cool! Where at? I swear Wren, if it’s at that Roach Café again…” Wren rolled her eyes at Brady’s reluctance to let that one go.
“That was ONE TIME! And…it’s sort of a collection of places…” Ashe knit his brows together,
“What do you mean?” Wren bit her lip, to keep from screaming from the build up of excitement,
“We’re going on a tour! As openers!” The guys all looked at her like she was an alien.
“If this is some sort of joke…” Ashe asked suspiciously, and Wren quickly shook her head.
“No! I swear! I sent out audition videos, and I got an email in seventh period, it was accepted! We’re going on a North American tour!” Wren watched as the news hit each of the guys, and their smiles grew at what dreams they had, that now could come true.
“Well, don’t leave us in the dark!” Cameron burst out, “Tell us who we’re opening for!” Wren’s smile dropped for a second. They would want to know that. Wren was psyched at the news that they were opening for him. Her inspiration. The reason she wanted to be a singer. But the guys…they might not be as happy as her. But it was a tour, no matter what, they would be excited right?
“Greyson Chance.” She felt herself whisper, before she could stop and lie.
