Such a short chapter! Well, I finished this story today: Final words count: 37, 396. I'm so proud, hahaha. Thanks everyone for reading and commenting. Let's see it through all 37 chapters!
“Still not done?” I giggle as he pulls me towards the piano.
“Nope,” Greyson says playfully.
He sits me down on the bench and I look at him. His hand falls across mine, and then he slowly places my fingers on the piano.
“I can’t play,” I tell him. But I’m grinning.
“That’s fine,” he says. He steps back and takes a camera from his pocket. “You look beautiful tonight, did I tell you that?”
I blush. “No, but thank you, Greyson.”
“Let’s light up the dark with your smile,” Greyson says.
I laugh, and I see a bright flash. “Greyson!”
“Come on, this is fun!” he smiles. “Keep pretending to play.”
“But I can’t!” I protest, but I’m giggling and Greyson keeps snapping pictures from different angles. Then he takes the camera, sets on the opposite side of the bench and presses the button. Immediately he runs and I watch the red light countdown—5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and then the bright flash. Greyson is at my side in the instant the camera flashed. He runs back and checks it. The buttons beep and Greyson laughs.
“What? Let me see,” I say, getting up.
“In a minute,” Greyson promises. “First, why don’t you stay where you are?” Greyson taps more buttons and then clicks the capture button. And he runs to sit next to me.
“Smile,” he says, leaning against me. I lean back towards him and smile. The camera flashes. Greyson checks it.
“Perfect,” he says. I get up this time and look at it with him. I tip my head over the camera to look at the screen. But Greyson has caught my chin in his hands and turns my face towards him. He presses his lips against mine. “Perfect,” he whispers after we break the kiss. “You are perfect.”
I don’t respond; only rest my head against his shoulder, my chest to his chest. It seems like I can feel his heart beating.
“You know, fate is really funny,” I say softly after a while.
“How so?” Greyson strokes my hair. We’re dancing to no music, slowly rocking back and forth, spinning in slow motion.
“Well…” I bite my lip. I don’t really want to say this out loud. It’s a first date. My mouth will stay shut.
“Come on, Laurie,” he urges.
“It feels like this is right,” I say, so quiet the words are blown away by our breath.
“I think so too. I think…” Greyson murmurs.
“You think?” I repeat.
“No, I wasn’t done talking. I was saying that I think that you’re it for me forever.”
“I don’t want to hurt,” I blurt out worriedly.
“They wouldn’t call it falling in love unless you get hurt sometimes,” Greyson says.
I stop moving and back away.
“But I won’t let you fall,” he promises. He kisses my hair, and pulls me close. “Forever?”
“It must really be fate,” I reply.
Greyson kisses me slowly and time seems frozen in our small corner of the universe.
He takes me back to the piano and we both sit down. I place a finger on a random key. Greyson’s hand covers mine. His hand is warm despite the winter air that tries to steal the heat. He presses down on the cold ivory. He starts playing a tune and I slide my hand from underneath his.
“No it don’t come easy. No it don’t come fast. Lock me up inside your garden. Take me to the river side. And fire burning me up, desire taking me so much higher and leaving me whole.” He stops playing.
“Wait, don’t stop,” I protest.
“But these lyrics are incorrect,” he says.
“They’re fine,” I tell him.
“But they don’t fit.”
“How so?”
“Well, it seems to have come pretty easy and fast. Of course, after I waited a while.”
I smile. “I hate to tell you, but I don’t have a garden.”
“And where’s the nearest river?”
“Not one I’d take you to,” I say.
“But, fire is burning me up,” he says thoughtfully.
“There seems to be an inferno inside me,” I tilt my head so it leans against his shoulder.
“Desire is taking me higher,” he says. “But I’m already whole.”
“Really?” I ask.
“I’ve found you by the most random chances. We both say it’s fate. I think that I am already whole.” he whispers.
I sigh deeply. “Sometimes it’s hard to forget that this is a first date.”
We’re back in the city, running down sidewalks and laughing until we have to fall against a wall. It’s starting to snow again and everything is bathed in gold and red and blue. The city lights illuminate everything until it’s glowing.
We race through the streets and the world is dissolving in snow and blurry lights. I’m laughing and I keep hearing something like pianos in my ears. Greyson’s laugh is musical. Finally when we’ve been splashed by an angry driver, we wave down a cab and he takes me back to my house. I get one more kiss before he leaves. Soaking wet, tasting like what dirt would.
But I think that it doesn’t matter—it was the best first date and the best one of the night.
As soon as he’s gone, I realize how cold I am. I shiver, my teeth chattering. Inside, I throw off my clothes and step into the shower. I rinse the dirt from my face and body. When I’m finished I make a cup of tea and sit on the couch. I press the bullet necklace to my lips and fall asleep with a notebook on my lap.
